Singer Marianne Faithfull, who famously dated Mick Jagger and rebooted her career after it was nearly derailed by drug addiction, has died.

A fresh-voiced singer and Mick Jagger’s muse in the 1960s, she went on to experience more than her share of hard times before emerging triumphant.

The singer, who had a long relationship with Sir Mick Jagger at the height of her fame, also carved out a career as an actress.

Faithfull acted alongside Orson Welles, Oliver Reed, Alain Delon and Anna Karina during her time in Hollywood.

Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, her spokesperson has said. Faithfull was known for hits that included As Tears Go By, which reached the UK top 10 in 1964, and starring roles in films including 1968's The Girl On A Motorcycle.

Faithfull, who famously dated Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the 1960s, was nominated for a Grammy for her celebrated seventh album, "Broken English."
