Thousands of South Korean citizens were gathering on Sunday near impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s residence a day before an arrest warrant for him expires.

A warrant has been issued for President Yoon Suk Yeol's arrest - but he's currently avoiding detention by remaining holed up in an official residence.

Hundreds of South Koreans, bundled up against freezing temperatures and snow, rallied overnight into Sunday near the residence of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol as authorities prepared to renew their efforts to detain him over his short-lived martial law decree.

The one-week warrant for his detention is valid through Monday. There were no immediate indications that authorities were ready to send investigators back to the residence as of Sunday afternoon.

Blocked by bodyguards, officials retreated after several hours without serving a court warrant to hold President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning on insurrection charges.
