mlive on MSNMLB Draft 2025: Tigers focus on late-blooming prospects in Day 1The Detroit Tigers leaned into selecting late-rising prospects as part of their haul in Day 1 of the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday. The Tigers began the night picking shortstop Jordan Yost with the No. 24 pick, followed by catcher Michael Oliveto 34th overall, righty Malachi Witherspoon in the second round and lefty Ben Jacobs in the third round.
Major League Baseball draft wrapped on Monday with the final 17 rounds. While Day 2 didn't carry quite as much intrigue as opening night—which saw the Washington Nationals take Fort Cobb-Broxton HS shortstop Eli Willits first overall—it gave teams a great opportunity to load up on developmental depth.
The Orioles’ first three picks were Auburn catcher/corner outfielder Ike Irish (No. 19), Coastal Carolina catcher Caden Bodine (No. 30) and Wehiwa Aloy (No. 31). The No. 19 pick was the Orioles’ original first-round selection, while Nos. 30 and 31 were compensation for losing Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander in free agency.
With the No. 15 overall pick, Boston snagged Oklahoma righty Kyson Witherspoon, a flame-throwing starter with high upside. Reaction to the pick has largely been positive, with multiple pundits stating that Witherspoon was their top-ranked right-handed pitcher in this year’s draft.
ATLANTA — The first three rounds of the 2025 MLB Draft took place Sunday in Atlanta. Although there were no draftees in attendance — a disappointing, if intriguing, circumstance to monitor for the event moving forward — this year’s draft still provided plenty of excitement and surprising moments that will help shape the league for years to come.
The Orioles entered the MLB draft with 24 picks in 20 rounds. Follow The Baltimore Sun’s coverage and analysis of each selection.
