The Slovenian attacked on the final climb, distancing the rest of the race, arch-rival Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) included, in a move that looked as though it may have been not just stage-winning but Tour de France-winning as well. Pogačar now sits in yellow, 3:31 ahead of Vingegaard – a difficult margin to recoup for the Dane.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) stamped his authority on the Tour de France as the race visited the high mountains for the first time, attacking 12km from the top of Hautacam to score a dominant solo stage 12 victory.
