Rory McIlroy doesn't have a cure-all solution to golf's pace-of-play problem, and he knows the ideas he does have won't make everyone happy.
McIlroy makes his season debut on the U.S.-based circuit this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, one of the tour’s $20 million signature events. It’s a big week—or at least it’s supposed to be, with a limited field of 80 players that includes 45 of the top 50 in the world playing one of the most iconic courses on the planet.
The four-time major champion has a lot of thoughts on the state of pro golf but said “we shouldn’t try to dumb down golf to appeal to more people.”

Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Billy Horschel represented Atlanta; they grabbed the lead over Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young on the first hole of triples. Only one more point was awarded across the final eight holes of the first session as Atlanta doubled its lead heading into the six holes of singles.

Justin Thomas, an important face of the PGA Tour and TGL, pointed out that it is difficult to make drastic changes and speed up the game. “It’s tough. Look, this is my 10th year on Tour. I’ve been on the PAC a lot of years. We’ve talked about pace of play all 10 years,” Thomas said, as quoted by Golf.com
Before his 2025 debut on the PGA Tour at Pebble Beach, McIlroy was asked if TGL, LIV Golf, and YouTube influencers are additive to or diminish the core product, the PGA Tour.
