As the departure of Ald. Walter Burnett leaves Mayor Brandon Johnson with the challenge of picking his third Zoning Committee chair, the City Council’s Black and Latino caucuses have already begun jockeying for the highly coveted leadership spot.

The City Council drove the final nail in the coffin for a controversial "snap curfew" ordinance, upholding Mayor Brandon Johnson's veto of the measure that would have allowed police to impose a youth curfew anywhere in Chicago on as little as 30 minutes' notice.

The Council fell six votes shy of overriding Johnson’s veto of an ordinance allowing the Chicago police superintendent to enact a curfew targeting gatherings of young people anywhere in the city with 30 minutes' notice.
