Mark Zuckerberg says Meta is building out some massive data centers to power its AI ambitions and compete with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

Meta is building data centers in tents to rapidly scale AI infrastructure and try to catch rivals such as DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Many of Meta’s competitors have multi-gigawatt sites planned, including Oracle, Google, OpenAI, and Amazon. TechRepublic recently reported that Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary is building the world’s largest AI data center in Canada.

Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that Meta Platforms would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centers for superintelligence, intensifying his pursuit of a technology he has chased with a talent war for top engineers.

Data center operators in China, which use Nvidia’s H20 chips to crunch data for various AI services, have been struggling to find a local alternative that is as good as the U.S. company’s chips.

The Japanese telecom giant’s data-center arm is aiming to pour billions into its business to meet rising demand for artificial-intelligence computing and other uses, its chief executive said.

During the summit held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15, companies promised new data centers, new jobs, cybersecurity education, energy research, and more.

With facilities that rival nuclear plants in energy use, Meta is scaling its AI ambitions to unprecedented levels.
