A disorganized low-pressure area off Florida is showing increasing chances of becoming a tropical depression or tropical storm this week.
A trough of low pressure located offshore the Atlantic Coast of northern Florida could bring heavy rains to the Gulf Coast region and Southeast Louisiana later this week as it moves westward, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Low pressure is expected to emerge over the Gulf of Mexico this week and it may move into a favorable environment for tropical cyclone development.
Early models show more than a foot of rain could fall in Florida's Big Bend region and up to 5 inches in Central Florida. So far, the National Hurricane Center is not tracking any systems. However, the WPC's long-range forecast shows a 20% chance of tropical development from July 16-22.
AccuWeather forecasters are keeping an eye an area for potential tropical development near Florida July 14-17.
