The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting a death investigation after a deceased person was found in south Alabama waters Wednesday beneath the Interstate 10 Bayway in Baldwin County, the agency said.

Interstate 10 Bayway traffic slowed to a crawl and was halted at times this morning as law enforcement officials on both spans and in the water below conducted what is being described as a death investigation.

Following snow, sleet and ice that arrived in the Big Bend and South Georgia Tuesday due to a winter storm, a large stretch of a major highway shut down Wednesday evening.

Interstate 10 westbound was closed for nearly an hour after a multi-car accident in New Orleans East. The interstate fully reopened just before 7 a.m. with congestion reaching five miles. The accident was first reported at 5:29 a.m. between Read Boulevard and Bullard Avenue. Details are still limited, and no word on injuries.

Interstate 10 in the Baton Rouge metro area reopened to both eastbound and westbound traffic Thursday afternoon, the Department of Transportation and Development announced.

Per Florida Highway Patrol, I-10 from mile marker 5 to mile marker 56 is CLOSED. The Barrancas Avenue Bayou Chico Bridge was closed in both directions at 4:58 p.m. because of ice, according the Florida Department of Transportation.

The official said he could not confirm at this time whether an individual died due to the incident as more information is still being gathered.
